When to toss your makeup

I want to tell you a story about an old mascara. This is my own story and I want to share it you because I want you to avoid such painful experience.

When I was a total beauty junkie I had more than 5 mascaras (I really don't remember how many I owned)  but really  how to use all the mascaras in 3 months? Only if I had 6 pairs of eyes and still not manage to use it up all.

So one day I used probably an old mascara, I know now that was old, because I got a pretty eye inflammation, red eyes, painfull swallowed lids and break for almost 2 weeks for any eye makeup. This happend because I didn't have control over all my beauty products and I didn't mark them with the date I start using them.

So my 3 big lessons from this experience that I want to share with are:

A guide to minimalism beauty

I am all about minimalism since 2015, and still learning about this concept and test everything into my life. When you will understand why less is more, you will have more space to create and think,  pure joy to see other things that are not your things, and appreciation of what you really own now right now.

So when it comes to my skincare formulas, what I eat, and how I live, I believe that less is more.

But as total beauty junkie as I was before, it’s admittedly difficult to apply this philosophy to my beauty routine! If you’re anything like (the old) me, your beauty drawer is currently housing: five moisturizers, three  bronzers, seven mascaras (ah, free samples get us every time), and literally…ONE THOUSAND eye shadows and eye liners. It’s not good…just not good at all.

So today, I’m giving you my personal tips on how to easily minimize your beauty drawer. With these tips, I truly believe you’ll be able to invite more clean and quality products into your life, and easily toss out the “junk”.

1.Collect & Sort

The first step was to gather, collect and sort every last makeup item I owned and used. I found it easiest to dump it out and go through it on a solid, clean surface. Two important questions I ask myself  before I start to select and toss. How much do you actually have? Do you use everything you own? What do you have? These are important things to establish early on. It was time to say farewell to anything that was outdated or never being used. Go through everything and toss what you don’t like or are no longer wear. Try the shades out to make sure that you like them on  you rather than just in the packaging!

2.Organize & store ( not in your bathroom anymore)

Organize, organize, organize. Find a simple, beautiful organizer that will make it easy for you to find exactly what you need, when you need it. I love using acrylic organizers for makeup because they are extremely simple to keep clean, clear that you can see all your makeup when you reach for somethings and some have really great design. They allow me to keep makeup divided by type, and everything is nice and easy to see and access.

3.Mark your products

When I was sorting, I didn't know when most of the items were purchased to know if they were expired or not. It was just a guessing game that I wanted to prevent next time around. I added a marker to my makeup drawer which now allows me to mark any new makeup with the purchase date.

4. Know your stuff

Using my phone, I quickly snapped a photo of the name/brand/color of each of my favorite cosmetic items. I then added the photos to a special album on my phone's camera roll titled Makeup Details. So many times I have been out shopping and become overwhelmed with the choices and have a hard time recalling my favorite colors and shades. Or, I forget to write down the specific type and see it on sale. By saving all of the details on my phone in a single image, I will always have access to my favs and be prepared come shopping day.

 5 . Find a favourite brand

Find one brand that you love for each of your beauty products. Why have more than one go-to eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow palette, or sunscreen? If you’re having success with a specific product, stick to it.

6.  Get versatile !

Find ways to make your products multi-functional…get creative! For example, use cream blush  as a lipstick or use your bronzer as a natural eye shadow! And like me, if you don’t use it already, coconut oil is a beauty must have  for me. I use it as a moisturizer, makeup remover, hair mask, body lotion and even teeth whitening.

 7. Learn to toss it!

I know…you saved the best (and hardest) for last. Do NOT use expired makeup or any product that looks like it may be going bad  or smells funny. Some products, like powder-based makeup, can be used for around two years, but liquid mascara and eyeliner should be discarded after two or three months! (PS: if you haven’t used something in six months, get rid of it! You probably don’t need it and won’t use it, no matter how many times you tell yourself that you will).

How to declutter your makeup bag like a PRO + printable checklist

"Minimalism"  has became a trend spreading into all areas of our lives in the last past years. It's become a key focus for many and especially for me and my family, integral to a calmer, healthier and happier life.

When it comes to beauty, I quite like the concept of minimalism, because I get more clarity about what look I want to create, intentional about beauty in general, and organized with my makeup stuff. As I’ve got older, it's fair to say there are certain products that I find myself reaching for over others time after time, and while variety is the spice of life as they say, I definitely find getting ready a lot less overwhelming when I have less to choose from.

I’m pretty sure that January will see endless people purchase Marie Kondo's Life Changing Magic of Tidying in a bid to declutter and minimize. This helped me in 2015 when I wanted to switch from a chaotic and full of stuff life to a simpler and intentional life.

Let's turn our attention to your makeup bag, on the eyeshadows, brushes and sponges and products you haven’t worn in  years! A declutter is a must!

I write this printable checklist  for you (to make it simple and accountable) with some handy tips on sorting through the good, the bad, and the ugly inside your makeup bag.

So, you decided that you want a CLEAN, SIMPLE and ORGANIZED makeup bag! Just follow my 4 brilliant steps to declutter  fast and smart:

First thing’s first, throw anything out that is leaking, smells bad or  has changed color or consistency or you don't remember the date you purchase (mascaras I would definitely get rid of after 3 months).

.Second think about the makeup you actually wear? What are the makeup essentials you reach for on a daily basis? Put all these to one side in a keep bag!

With all the items you have left, decide which ones you might want to save for special occasions,  summer or a different season, keep these away somewhere safe but out of sight and then get rid of whatever’s left. Trust me…you’re probably going to simplify and invest in your beauty products with intention this year anyway!!!!

Next look at storage options that will keep your daily essentials clean, tidy and organised. I love the Acrylic Storage. Depending on how much makeup you own will depend on what size storage you need, but I find these acrylic storage (check them here) has something for every Makeup Addict! Now you can be like a kid in a candy store and rearrange your makeup knowing you can find everything you need!
